Cappadocia

Volcanic activity followed by river erosion dropped odd looking tufa columns in the scrub desert of central Turkey. Christian monks and hermits for centuries carved caves in the tufa to make homes, kitchens, and churches. We flew from Istanbul to Cappadocia to spend two nights in this Anatolian adventure-sports destination to do some hiking and flying. Because of the low winds and grand topography, Cappadocia is one of the best places in the world to ascend in a hot air balloon. One chilly morning at 5:30, we met one hundred other balloon to spend an hour in the air.
