Day 322– February 23, 2015

I butt my head against the take-home bioinformatics problem set. I spend two days learning how to install software packages. Hitting conceptual blocks, I take breaks to return with new ideas and possible solutions.

My poor 2008 computer fills with new programs. Genetic data is so large – 8GB – that my computer struggles to open and manipulate files. I leave the computer to whir overnight, but in the morning find it crashed and out of memory.

I try instead a smaller test bed of genetic data. Perhaps if I can move my toy set of data through my nascent bioinformatics pipeline, I can try the real data and submit my code. Ug, lots of work ahead today and tomorrow, work that I’m not sure I can finish. (I didn’t)
